The Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia has been in operation since 1980.  We are a registered not for profit and serve persons living with epilepsy, their families and their communities in the three Maritime Provinces. 


We are currently seeking interested candidates for the Treasurer position.  The commitment for Treasurer is as follows:



  • To oversee all financial matters of EANS.
  • Must be a board member according to bylaws
  • No specific duties are mandated by the bylaws

Specific Current Duties ​

  • Do monthly Treasurer’s report to the Board
  • Prepare (with ED) budget for year (fiscal year January 1-December 31 – this would be in October-November)
  • Prepare Treasurer’s report for AGM
  • Respond to inquiries from staff and board re financials 

Duty that a new treasurer should assume:

  • Be a signing officer
  • Monthly – Board meeting once per month for 9 months of the year on the last Tuesday of every month.  Board does not meet in July, August or December.  Meetings start at 5:30 and will last till approximately 7:30. Time commitment per month: 2 hours for Board meeting and 1 hour to peruse financial statement and prepare a brief, written report for the Board.  This report is sent to the ED to circulate and is required one week prior to the Board Meeting.


  • The organization does significant fundraising because that is how we support ourselves.  We ask all of our Directors to support at least one fundraising initiative per year aside from the Gala.  Time Commitment: Approximately 2 hours once per year or per event
  • We do ask all Directors to support the Purple Day Gala if at all possible and this is held (March 3, 2018) at the Westin.  This is not a hard task as it is a fun and well attended event.  Time commitment: Approximately 4 hours Saturday evening once per year
  • Every year in December, we put on a hot Christmas dinner for our members.  We ask as many of our Directors to pitch in and help literally “serve” our members from peeling vegetables, cooking a turkey, plating, serving or cleaning up; any one of these tasks.  Time commitment: Approximately 3 hours on a Sunday (December 10, 2017 Fort Massey on Queen Street Halifax) 


  • The Executive Director prepares a preliminary budget and the Treasurer will meet with the ED to discuss and prepare a fiscal budget for the new year.  Time commitment: 2 hours preliminary meeting and 1 hour to prepare budget to be presented at the next Board Meeting.  The Executive Director will help in any way.



  • Financial background, CPA designation preferred
  • Clear vulnerable sector check
  • Previous community involvement is considered an asset
