The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is seeking a senior CFO and Deputy Director of Operations to oversee the stewardship and sustainable management of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS). This position provides strategic advice and coordination on all financial, risk and legal issues to the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee and the Director/CEO of the AGNS. They are accountable for the administrative, financial and risk management operations as well as general operations of the AGNS, including development of financial and operational strategy, metrics tied to the strategy and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve gallery assets and report accurate financial results.

 Reporting to the Director/CEO of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the CFO and Deputy Director of Operations is an integral member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for the Visitor Services and Operations functions of the AGNS including visitor services, facilities management, security and building cleaning and maintenance liaison with TIR. They are responsible for the negotiation and management of leaseholder relations, the Gallery shop, and the AGNS Western Branch in Yarmouth. They are the main contact for all government departments including Executive Council, Communities, Culture and Heritage, Finance and Internal Services.

The CFO and Deputy Director ensures that the Gallery’s human resource functions are in compliance with government and gallery policies, serves as a resource to managers for HR issues and concerns, and acts as the AGNS’s main point of contact with the HR/CSU and the Public Service Commission.


A Bachelor’s degree and professional accounting designation are required. Minimum five years of experience in a senior financial role. Experience within government would be considered an asset. Experience with not-for-profit organizations and working with Boards as well as multiple stakeholders is required.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate they have managed human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, understanding and respecting corporate human resource practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, maintaining internal communication, monitoring revenues and expenditures, adhering to procurement guidelines, acquiring goods and services in the most cost effective manner, and accurately forecasting budgets and cashflows. Experience in a unionized environment is an asset. Operational experience in a similar environment would also be an asset.

Special Statement

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Board is on the cusp of significant change including the development of a new strategic plan that will include a blueprint for building a new home for the AGNS. The CFO and Deputy Director of Operations will play an important role in helping to shape the new strategic direction for the Gallery and support the Board and Director/CEO to realize its strategic vision by providing sound management of its finances and operations. This individual will serve as co-second in charge and may act in the absence of the Director/CEO.

Pay Grade:  EC 12  

Salary Range:  $2,874.00 - $3,953.00 Bi-Weekly
