A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been negotiated between CPA Canada and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), effective November 19, 2018.   

Registration Eligibility 

Eligibility requirements for this category are: 
  • Be a member in good standing of ICAI; 
  • Have been admitted to ICAI by completing the ICAI's qualifying examinations and not by virtue of another agreement with a third party

Education, Examination and Experience Requirements

Key features for members in good standing seeking the Canadian CPA designation: 

  • Receive exemption from all prerequisites for admission to the CPA PEP and from all CPA PEP education modules.
  • Must successfully complete the Common Final Examination (CFE) 
  • To prepare for success on the CFE, ICAI members are strongly recommended to complete Capstone 1 and Capstone 2, and gain core knowledge of:
    • Canadian tax
    • Canadian law
    • Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Entities
  • Are deemed to meet Canadian CPA experience requirements for certification if they have completed:
    • Two years of post-designation experience plus a recognized university degree, or
    • Five years of post-designation experience but no recognized university degree
  • Applicants with less than the specified post-qualification experience will be subject to a review of their practical experience obtained pre- and post-qualification
  • All relevant experience must have been gained as a member or student of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

The MOU applies to membership only.  Admission as a member under this route does not automatically provide a member with the right to offer public accounting services to the public as an engagement partner responsible for the audits of financial statements.  Members are required to meet CPA Nova Scotia’s Public Accounting Licensing requirements.

You must first register as a student with the CPA Atlantic School of Business (CPA ASB).  Once you you have a successful result on the CFE and have met the other membership criteria, you will be eligible to apply for membership with CPA Nova Scotia.  Please contact CPA ASB at [email protected].
