REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes (EAM) have been in operation since 1980.  We are a registered not for profit and serve persons living with epilepsy, their families and their communities in the three Maritime Provinces. 

We are currently seeking interested candidates for the Treasurer position.  The commitment for Treasurer is as follows:

 

General:

  • To oversee all financial matters of EAM
  • Must be a board member in accordance to the bylaws
  • Will be a member of the Executive and will sit on the following committees: Executive, Finance and Human Resource

     

    Specific current duties:

  • Do monthly Treasurer’s report to the Board
  • Prepare (with CEO) budget for year (fiscal year January 1-December 31 – prepare November to present January)
  • Assure all financial records are ready to send to Accountant for year end
  • Prepare Treasurer’s report for AGM
  • Respond to inquiries from staff and board re financials

     

    Duty that a new treasurer should assume:

  • Be a signing officer

     

    Terms of Office

  • Each Director serve a 3-year term with the option of serving a second 3-year term.The exception would be the President’s role who can serve two 3-year terms and can serve an additional year as Past President.Upon completion of a second 3-year term, the Director must step away from the Board for a period of one year.

 

Every two Months – Board meeting every two months (with exceptions) and are scheduled as follows: January, April, June (AGM), September, November.  Meetings start at 6:00 and will last till approximately 7:30. Time commitment per two months: approximately 2 hours (or less) for Board meeting and 1-2 hours to peruse financial statement and prepare a brief, written report for the Board.  This report is sent to the CEO to circulate and is required at least one week prior to the Board Meeting.

 

Occasionally –

  • The organization does significant fundraising because that is how we support ourselves.We ask all of our Directors to support at least one fundraising initiative per year aside from the Gala.Time Commitment: Approximately 1-2 hours once per year or per event
  • We do ask all Directors to support the Purple Day Gala if at all possible and this is held generally in March at the Westin.This is not a hard task as it is a fun and well attended event.Time commitment: Approximately 4 hours Saturday evening once per year
  • Every year in December, we put on a hot Christmas dinner for our members.We ask as many of our Directors to pitch in and help literally “serve” our members from peeling vegetables, cooking a turkey, plating, serving or cleaning up; any one of these tasks.Time commitment: Approximately 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon (second Sunday of December at Fort Massey on Queen Street Halifax)


Annually –

  • The CEO prepares a preliminary budget and the Treasurer will meet with the CEO to discuss and prepare a fiscal budget for the new year.Time commitment: 2 hours preliminary meeting and 1 hour to prepare budget to be presented at the next Board Meeting.The CEO will help you in any way you need.
  • Once per year the annual performance evaluation is done with the CEO by the Executive.Time Commitment:

    1-1 ½ hours per year.

    Requirements –

  • Financial background, CPA designation preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of Sage 50
  • Clear vulnerable sector check
  • Previous community involvement is considered an asset
