Instructor Bios

Mark Ansems, CPA, CA received his CA designation in 1996.  He provides project management and consulting services for organizations of various sizes in manufacturing, telecommunications, professional services and real estate industries.  Mark works directly with executive and key stakeholders on complex enterprise scale projects such as information systems selections and implementations, manufacturing plant consolidations, infrastructure builds, and product launches.

Amanda Avery, CPA, CA is the Internal Auditor for the 13 NSCC Campuses and former Assurance Manager at Grant Thornton LLP. Amanda has been concentrating on audit and assurance for over six years focusing on a variety of Not-For-Profit, Public Sector and First Nations clients. Amanda is equally comfortable giving business advice too small to mid-sized owner-managed organizations as well as large government entities. Prior to her audit focus, Amanda held various accounting roles in real estate and manufacturing companies. Amanda is the Treasurer of the Colchester East-Hants Public Library Foundation and also enjoys spending time with her Newfoundland dogs and horses.

Hugh Avery, CPA, CA·IFA is the Regional Manager of Financial Management for the Atlantic Region with the Finance and Accounting Branch of Public Services and Procurement Canada. Previously Hugh was a Senior Forensic Accountant with the Forensic Accounting Management Group for 14 years. In addition to overseeing the forensic accounting engagements for the Atlantic Region of FAMG Hugh was seconded to the Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit of the RCMP in Halifax where he conducted forensic accounting engagements, participated in searches and technical interviews in support of investigative work, and assisted investigators by providing advice in the preparation of documents during the course of legal procedures. He has also testified before the courts as an expert in forensic accounting on several occasions. Hugh obtained his CA designation in 1998, his Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist designation in 2005 and received his IFA designation in 2010. In 2008 he received his graduate diploma in Investigative and Forensic Accounting from the University of Toronto.

Josh Beaver, CPA, CA, CIRP, LIT is a Partner of Consulting and Deals at a Big Four firm in Halifax. With over ten years of experience Josh focuses on all aspects of mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity financing and financial restructuring. In his role Josh works with private equity funds, family offices, lenders and business owners to structure and execute transactions. Josh has also worked in industry, as the CFO of Scotsburn Inc., where he led the restructuring, refinancing and ultimately divestiture of the business to a strategic acquirer in 2017.

Karine Benzacar is Managing Director of Knowledge Plus Corp., an organization which specializes both in business training and in providing financial, accounting and management information services. As a professional accountant, certified both in Canada and in the U.S., Karine's practice has involved organizations all across North America. Karine has also taught Masters courses at several leading univeristies and has published numerous articles in leading industry publications.

Michelle Black is an associate with Stewart McKelvey in the Halifax Office. Her expertise lies in the areas of management side labour and employment law where she advises clients on labour relations, human rights issues, administrative, occupational health & safety, workers' compensation and education law. She has worked on matters for various types of organizations, ranging from those with complex systems of human resources administration to those with a small staff. Michelle has appeared at all levels of court in Nova Scotia, before Human Rights Boards of inquiry, and at the Nova Scotia Labour Board. While she assists her clients with adversarial matters, Michelle also provides proactive advice on ways to avoid issues before they arise, including the creation of effective employment agreements, policies, and other employee communications. Michelle holds a BSc from Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario and an MSc and LLB from Dalhousie University.

Ward Blatch, CPA, CA is a partner with K2E Canada Inc. which provides consulting and training services throughout Canada and the United States. Ward covers a wide variety of topics include Business Intelligence, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Technology Updates, Internal Controls, Paperless Office, and Cloud Computing.

Bobby Boutilier, CPA, CA is Vice President of Tax for Armco Capital Group of Companies.  He is responsible for implementing and executing tax planning and compliance for a diverse group of privately held companies.  Prior to joining Armco, Bobby was Director of Tax Reporting and Compliance for a national grocery retailer with a focus on tax compliance and financial reporting for tax.  Bobby has also spent five years in the tax group of a Big Four firm, providing personal and corporate tax services to clients ranging from owner managed companies to large public corporations.  Bobby has presented numerous tax topics for CPANS and other groups.

Chris Boland, CPA, CA, CMA, B.COMM., CICA is a professional International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) consultant, specializing in assisting clients with their training, advisory, adoption and application of IFRS, and the application of new IASB/FASB standards. Chris has extensive experience with matters such as current IFRS, new IFRS, IASB Exposure Drafts, discussion papers and U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) standards. Prior to establishing his public practice and IFRS teaching career, Chris was general manager (accounting, IFRS, internal controls and tax) at Canada Post Corporation. His earlier positions at other organizations include CFO and VP finance; director of tax and treasury, controller; manager of financial reporting and controller (overseas operations); manager of financial reporting; and budget analyst. He was also an auditor at the Office of the Auditor General. Chris has 30 years of experience in sectors which include private and publicly traded entities, pharma, Crown corporations, government, real estate, oil and gas, mining, high-tech: telecommunications and software, and many other industries.

Rob Bourgeois, CPA, CA is the Director of Financial Accounting with the NS Department of Finance and Treasury Board.  He is responsible for providing public sector financial accounting support to government departments and overseeing the preparation of the Province’s Consolidated Public Accounts.  He has presented numerous public sector topics to various groups within the Province.  He has been with the Province of Nova Scotia since January 2009 and has extensive experience in the interpretation and application of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).  Prior to joining the Province, Rob worked with KPMG in Halifax for 7 years.  He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from St. Mary's University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.

David Cameron, CPA, CA is a Tax Partner with Collins Barrow Nova Scotia Inc.  He has twenty years of experience in public accounting, including fifteen years of experience as a full time tax practitioner.  He has also worked in industry for 2 ½ years, primarily in a lead role as Director of Taxation for a large privately held corporate group focused on real estate development and investments.  He has a broad range of experience managing Canadian corporate, personal, and trust taxation compliance and planning requirements for both privately held and publicly traded companies.

Patrick Carruthers, CPA, CA is a member of the Domestic Tax team at Grant Thornton LLP in Halifax. He is expected to complete Part III of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program in 2018 and obtained his CA designation in 2016. At Grant Thornton LLP, he focuses on corporate and personal tax planning, corporate reorganizations, compliance and estate planning. In addition, he has a keen interest in international inbound taxation, cryptocurrencies and real estate development. Patrick is involved with several community organizations in a volunteer capacity and has been an instructor for CPA Nova Scotia since 2017.

Jeff Christian, CPA, CA is a Wealth Advisor at Scotia McLeod. He currently provides investment management, financial, tax and estate planning solutions for high net worth households, owner managed businesses and other charitable organizations. In addition to presenting various topics at CPA NS eff has been involved with the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy, the CICA Income Tax Practice Course and CPA Canada.

Alex Christianson, CPA, CA is a Senior Manager in the Assurance Group of PwC, working in the Halifax office and is also the Accounting Advisory Champion for the Atlantic region. Alex specializes in working with public companies and large private companies. As the Senior Manager on various publicly listed and privately owned companies, Alex takes a business-oriented approach to handling complex accounting and regulatory issues. In addition to providing audit and assurance services, he offers advice on implementing new accounting standards and assists with acquisitions and divestitures. Alex has extensive experience with both Canadian and US listed companies, having spent time working in San Jose, California working with emerging technology companies through equity and debt offerings on the NYSE and NASDAQ. 

Everett E. Colby, FCPA,FCGA,BSBA,CFE,C.Dir. is a principal of Colby McGeachy Professional Corporation, an independent member firm of Porter Hetu International. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner and Chartered Director. With more than 25 years of experience, he has served on University and College Boards, the Mississippi Mills Chamber of Commerce, Chaired the CGA Ontario Board and was Chair of CGA Canada’s National Tax and Fiscal Policy committee for 7 years.  In this capacity he appeared before Parliament and the Senate on a regular basis regarding various fiscal initiatives. He is frequently interviewed and quoted in newspapers such as the National Post, Toronto Star and Bottom Line and is a renowned seminar presenter on fraud and ethics topics across Canada and internationally for the AICPA (US), Bahamian and Grand Cayman governments.

Wayne Crawley, FCPA, FCA, is a business builder involved with several private companies including Venor Talent Group, Sports Entertainment Atlantic, Epix Engineering, Moore Executive Suites and others. Wayne had a 20 year career with Emera Inc. and successfully completed Business Development of over $1 billion in enterprise value. He has over 25 years of international experience in business development, strategy, operations, corporate effectiveness, audit and finance. Wayne has been active throughout his career serving the community and currently serves on the Board of the Halifax Convention Centre, Habitat for Humanity NS, Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia and is an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Military. He is also a member of the executive for Young Presidents Organization (YPO Gold Atlantic Chapter). Wayne was also recognized as Top 40 Under 40 in Canada in 2001.

Tammy Crowell, CPA, CA, MBA is a full time senior instructor at Dalhousie University in the Rowe School of Business. Tammy has provided training services to CPA students on a regional and national level for over two decades.  Tammy has instructed many professional development courses for CPA Nova Scotia and its legacy bodies.

Robert Dean, CPA, CA, CFP, TEP, is a Business Advisor with MNP in Dartmouth. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience, Robert assists with tax planning and compliance, compensation planning, succession, the purchase and sale of businesses and corporate reorganization. Since 2001, Robert has spoken and written about issues and industry trends related to tax strategies, business challenges and succession planning.  After earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Robert became a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), qualifying as a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 1996. He earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation in 1999 and the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation in 2013 and holds an advanced certificate in family business advising from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

Christine Doucet, LLB is a partner with the Halifax law firm of McGinty Doucet Walker and practices primarily in the area of family law. She has a particular interest in the financial aspects of separation and divorce as they relate to the division of matrimonial property and determination of income for support purposes. Ms. Doucet is a trained collaborative family lawyer and president of the Association of Collaborative Family Law Professionals of Nova Scotia. She is a member of the executive committee of the Nova Scotia branch of the Canadian Bar Association.

David Elsner is the President of DHE Consulting, providing training, consulting, and analytical solutions to organizations. Working across a number of industries, his specialties lie in solution implementation, guiding businesses to make use of their data assets, and developing cost-saving strategies. An experienced lecturer, David instructs analytical classes to clients including the Rotman School of Management, Ryerson University, and CPA Ontario.

Duncan Ferguson, CPA, CA is the Director, Taxation at Atlantic Corporation Limited based in Halifax, NS. He is responsible for coordinating and implementing tax planning and compliance for a diverse group of privately held companies. Prior to joining Atlantic Corporation Duncan was a Senior Manager in the Tax Group of Grant Thornton LLP in Halifax. Duncan has previously presented courses for CPANS, CPA Canada and ASCA dealing with various taxation topics.

Melinda Fleming, BA is a Senior Tax Manager with Grant Thornton LLP. She has over eleven years of experience working in Goods and Services Tax and Harmonized Sales Taxes.  Melinda has been with Grant Thornton for over five years advising a multitude of clients Nationally.  Prior to joining Grant Thornton, she worked with the Canada Revenue Agency as a tax compliance auditor.  She has a broad range of experience including (but not limited to) assisting clients with tax authorities, delivering planning, reorganization, advisory services and sales tax opinions.  Melinda has facilitated the GST/HST Updates ICANS course in the past and has presented to the Atlantic Canadian Tax Federation conference amongst other tax organizations. 

Danette Foster, CPA, CA, KPMG LLP

Stephen P. Franklin has taught Professional Development for 27 years, currently in his own practice with his own training programs.  Previously he worked for a number of years with the Atlantica Learning Corp.  Stephen’s earliest experience was working in partnership with Day-Timers of Canada. His courses are based on extensive research and methodical testing to ensure that the information, skills, processes and techniques presented are real solutions that produce real results.  Stephen is an experienced facilitator, facilitating in accordance with the International Board of Standards for Training Performance and Instruction. His experience also includes extensive personal coaching; helping clients develop personal motivation for professional skills development, facilitating them through the necessary behaviour changes to make it happen.

Michael Frenette, PMP, I.S.P., CMC, MCITP is owner of Corvo Project Management, a training and consulting firm specializing in project management training (est. 2010), and manages the project management office for the IT Section of Halifax Water. His areas of expertise include portfolio, program and project management, change management, requirements management, virtual teaming and enterprise project management. Mr. Frenette gained technical expertise in the early days of his career in Information Technology, later moving into management roles in the mid-eighties, working for companies engaged in utilities, oil and gas, manufacturing and IT & Management consulting. As a volunteer, he presided over the boards of the Canadian Information Processing Society of Nova Scotia (3 years), the Project Management Institute Nova Scotia Chapter (8 years) and PMI Global (10 years), with governance roles in the Technology Member Advisory Group,  Requirements Management Community of Practice, Social Media Advisory Group, and the Community Champions Advisory Group. He is currently a core member of a team authoring a new PMI practice guide. Michael is a graduate of PMI’s Leadership Institute Masters Class and holds a diploma from NSCC’s IT program. He holds professional certifications from CIPS (I.S.P./ITCP), PMI (PMP), ScrumStudy (SMC, SDC & SCT), Microsoft (MCITP), and ITSM (ITIL Foundation).

Lisa Gallivan was appointed as a part-time member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, a Masters of Business Administration and Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University. She has been a member of the Nova Scotia Bar since being called in 1997. Ms. Gallivan practiced with Stewart Mckelvey in Halifax for 23 years prior to establishing own independent practice with a focus on labour and employment, human rights and mediation and arbitration. She has appeared before various courts, administrative and professional regulatory bodies and commissions. Lisa is also a presenter, trainer and facilitator providing on-site training for employees and executives on all workplace matters including facilitation of executive meetings and retreats, policy development and strategic business planning.

Alex Garber, CPA, CA, MTax has been in public practice since 2004, focusing primarily on income taxation for Canadian owner-managed businesses and their shareholders. Alex also teaches at York University, at the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course and at the PEP program for aspiring CPA students. Alex started his career at Deloitte and he's currently working at Fuller Landau LLP in Toronto.

Diane Gaudon, FCPA, FCGA her own practice providing GST, HST, QST and provincial sales tax advice and training to businesses of all sizes across North America. Over the past 30 years, she has gained extensive accounting and taxation expertise spanning numerous industries. She is a very popular speaker who frequently presents commodity tax related material to numerous professional organizations and she has authored numerous publications and courses. In addition, Diane was on the Ontario provincial government HST Implementation Committee.

Maureen R Gillis, CPA, CA, facilitates adult learning in topics related to leadership, success, and human behaviour. With formal training in adult learning, professional training in human resources management, and with a designation as a Chartered Professional Accountant, Maureen brings a multi-disciplinary perspective to her interactive workshops. Her teaching and facilitation work began early in her career. She has taught for various universities and facilitated professional development courses for members of professional organizations. With nearly three decades of leadership experience, she brings professional insight to her courses, offering a variety of approaches to accommodate the different needs of learners. During her career, Maureen has also been active in volunteer roles as a coach and with organizations such as the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Public Sector Accounting Board, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia, Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia, the Financial Management Institute, the Chamber of Commerce, among others. She also served as a volunteer financial advisor for an NGO in Ghana, West Africa. Today, Maureen enjoys teaching and delivering courses to members of professional groups and associations on current topics of interest that support ongoing development and growth for leaders.

Sheila Gillis, FCPA, FCA is a Tax Partner with MGM & Associates, Sydney. She has presented training programs and courses on various taxation topics to staff as well as to clients and the business community. Sheila has presented the CPA NS' Tax Update Course in Sydney since 1995.

Mike Haley, M.Sc., is President of Landmark Decisions Inc., a Halifax-based niche consulting firm providing worldwide “performance alignment” facilitation, training, and implementation services.  Mike has over 25 years experience in developing and delivering professional training on strategic and operational planning and modeling techniques which help organizations improve their business decision-making capacity. Mike has worked internationally with clients such as Kroger Foods, Maersk-Sealand, Nomura Group, Pfizer, Telekom Malaysia, University of Sydney, US Navy, and various New Zealand government departments. Domestic clients include Air Canada, Bell Aliant, Canadian Coast Guard, Health Canada, Transport Canada, and Veterans Affairs. Mike is a Board member of the Performance and Planning eXchange (PPX), an Ottawa-based international centre of learning excellence for organizational performance and planning. Mike also serves on the Halifax Chapter Board of the Financial Management Institute of Canada (FMI), another Canadian not-for-profit volunteer association focused on knowledge sharing in all aspects of public sector financial management.

Terry Hainsworth practised law for 42 years in London. Over the years he has taught at the University of Western Ontario's law school and the Ontario Bar Admission course. He is a frequent lecturer at continuing education programs for the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is the author of several textbooks on Family Law widely used by family law lawyers throughout Canada. He now practices as a Family Law Mediator and Arbitrator.

Bruce Harnish, is a Senior Manager in the SR&ED and Government Incentives practice at Grant Thornton. Bruce retired from CRA after 36 years, most his career he spent in the SR&ED program as a Financial Reviewer, Financial Technical Advisor, and acting Financial Review Manager. Bruce has worked on special projects within the SR&ED group. He has also done a number of information/training sessions on SR&ED. Bruce brings with him a huge amount of experience about the SR&ED program.

Kate Harris, LLB is a Tax Partner with Patterson Law; she has practiced in the following areas: Taxation, estate planning and trusts, business law, professional corporations, the purchase and sale of businesses, corporate reorganizations, succession planning for the owner-manager.

Jules Hawkins, CPA, CA is a partner of Hawkins and Co. Accounting Professional Corp. (www.hawkins-accounting.ca) He received his UK CA in England in 1996, and his Ontario CA in 2005. Before founding his own firm in 2014, Jules spent 20 years with Big 4 and regional-level firms, focusing on assurance. He has significant experience developing and teaching training courses in both the UK and Canada. Jules teaches advanced accounting courses at the University of Windsor and serves on CPA Canada's SMP Advisory Committee. From 2011 through 2014, he was also Chief Financial Officer of Essex Angel Capital Inc., a TSX-Venture Exchange listed investment company.

Chace Hynes, CPA, CA, CBV is a Senior Manager at MNP LLP. Chace specializes in business valuation and providing transaction advisory support and financial modelling support on both buy-side and sell-side transactions. He has contributed to numerous valuation reports prepared for a variety of situations, including tax reorganizations, management buyouts, shareholder disputes, matrimonial disputes and strategic planning reasons. Chace joined WBLI Chartered Accountants, a predecessor firm to MNP, in 2011 after graduating from Dalhousie University, he became a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) in 2014 and a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) in 2016.

Andrew Inman, CPA, CA Andrew is a Manager with MNP’s Tax practice in Halifax. He obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Saint Francis Xavier University in 2011.  He became a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), qualifying as a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 2014.  Andrew has experience delivering advice and solutions to corporations and high net worth individuals, helping them navigate Canadian domestic, complex cross-border and international tax issues for large related groups of companies and privately-owned companies. Andrew has over 7 years in experience in accounting, private corporation tax and compensation planning, public company corporate tax planning, tax provisioning, tax due diligence, transaction tax and other tax reporting matters. Andrew also sits on the Board of Directors for Oakfield Golf and Country Club.

Dan Jennings, CPA, CA, CBV, CF, Q.Arb is a Partner with BDO, based in Halifax, NS.  He leads the firm’s Atlantic Valuation/M&A practice for small and mid-market entrepreneurial businesses.  Dan has presented to various groups in the accounting, banking, legal and entrepreneurial sectors, and has provided expert witness testimony in the NS, NB and NL courts, private arbitrations and the federal Tax Court.

Vijay Jog Ph.D. is the Founder and President of Corporate Renaissance Group (CRG) - a global firm that specializes in improving enterprise performance through innovative solution. Dr. Jog is a consultant to many government departments, crown corporations, and private sector firms around the world. His area of expertise covers value based management, executive compensation, ABC/ABM and designing of enterprise performance platforms. He is also a Chancellor Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Research Professor at Carleton University where he taught corporate finance and value based management at the Sprott School of Business. He is a recipient of many national and international awards including the Moulton Gold Medal and has been recognized by National Post as a “Leader in Management Education” in Canada. He has published over 100 research papers and books/monographs. He is a chemical engineer.

Samuel Kiragu, CPA (K), started his accounting career with KPMG Kenya before transferring to KPMG Cayman Islands where he was dealing with hedge funds audits. He also worked with UBS Funds Services Cayman focusing on hedge funds accounting and compliance. Before joining the academic world, he worked with Mitsubishi Funds Services, Halifax. He teaches Accounting and Finance courses at Mount Saint Vincent University. He is also the coordinator of financial services programs at Nova Scotia Community College (Ivany Campus).He is helping in developing new financial services courses relating to hedge funds and Canadian Securities. Sam is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS). In Canada, he has facilitated Anti-Money Laundering (AML) trainings to financial institutions, accounting firms, real estate associations and federal agencies including law enforcements. He is consulting with one of the big 4 accounting firms on forensic. He holds an MBA in Accounting from University of Liverpool (UK).

Kristina King, CPA, CA graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours from Acadia University before articling with KPMG in Calgary where she obtained her designation. Kristina has worked for KPMG in Calgary, Australia, and returned to Halifax in 2012 where she was a Senior Manager with KPMG’s audit practice. During her time in public accounting, her primary client base centered around the investment industry and not for profit sector. Kristina currently works for the Province of Nova Scotia. Kristina is also on the Finance Committee of the St. John Ambulance of Nova Scotia and marks the CFE as well as for the PEP program.

Todd King, CPA, CA is a Tax Partner with Collins Barrow Nova Scotia. Todd has over 20 years of experience providing Canadian and U.S.  tax and advisory services to domestic and international clients in a variety of industries.  Todd's practice focuses in the areas of owner-managed tax planning and compliance, cross-border estate planning and compliance and M&A.  Todd is a graduate of Saint Mary's University (B. Comm.) (1994), a Chartered Accountant (1996) and a Certified Public Accountant (State of Illinois) (2001).

Michelle Lane, CPCC is a leadership consultant, facilitator and coach. Michelle helps her clients discover and develop the clarity, competence and confidence they need to be more effective; build their capacity for more strategic and complex leadership; and create the conditions for success in the organizations in which they lead. Michelle's experience spans 35 plus years in multiple industries and sectors, encompassing public, private, non-profit and multi-sector work.

Abel Lazarus, CPA, CA, CFA, CFE, CPA (FL) is the Director, Corporate Finance with the Nova Scotia Securities Commission overseeing the reviews of offering materials and continuous disclosure filings. Abel is a member of the CSA OTC Derivatives Committee which oversees the policy and regulation of derivatives trading.  Prior to joining the Corporate Finance Branch, Abel was an Investigator with the Commission’s Enforcement Branch reviewing and investigating complaints relating to violations of the Nova Scotia Securities laws.  In addition to working for the Commission, Abel has worked for Castle Hall Alternatives conducting operational due diligence reviews of hedge fund managers, Halifax Regional Municipality conducting various internal reviews; the Financial Advisory Services group of PwC conducting various forensic accounting, due diligence, valuation and insolvency engagements across various industries in Canada, the Caribbean and the U.S.; and in private industry performing various accounting and corporate finance functions. Abel is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Nova Scotia, a Chartered Financial Analyst, a Certified Fraud Examiner and licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida.

Greg Leslie, CPA, CA, TEP is a Partner in Collins Barrow’s Halifax tax practice. Greg is involved with succession and estate planning, corporate reorganizations, tax compliance, and the charities and not-for-profit sector. A graduate of Dalhousie University where he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Greg was admitted into the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia (ICANS) in 2004. He is a current member of Family Business Atlantic and past president of the Halifax Estate Planning Council. He is a member of the Society or Trust and Estate Practitioners and currently sits on the Board of STEP Atlantic. Greg has completed Part III of the CICA In-depth Tax course. He is a frequent lecturer and tutor for CPA Nova Scotia and CPA Canada and has presented on income tax matters to a variety of local and regional business organizations.

Mallory Levy, CPA received her designation in 2017 specializing in the assurance and tax electives.  She has worked with Grant Thornton LLP in Halifax for three years in the assurance service line and recently moved to the Kentville office where she has been a member of the tax department for the past two years.  Mallory’s role involves providing compliance services for individuals, trusts and corporations as well undergoing tax planning for privately held businesses. 

Greg MacDonald, P.Eng. is a Senior Manager in the SR&ED and Government Incentives practice at Grant Thornton, and for the past 12 years has been helping clients claim SR&ED tax credits in a range of industries such as engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, IT, biotechnology and others. In this capacity, he’s assisted clients prepare claims, compile and provide supporting information to CRA during reviews, as well as working through the appeals process. Additionally, he’s provided client training courses, assisted with developing SR&ED processes, and advised clients on the impacts other incentive programs have on SR&ED and best practices when accessing multiple programs. Prior to this, Greg spent 12 years in engineering and process/operations roles in manufacturing.

Bruce MacInnis, CPA, CA is the Director of Professional Standards with CPA Nova Scotia. He has worked in public accounting for the prior 18 years and as a CFO for 12 years before then. In the private sector he designed and implemented internal control and management reporting systems, and in public practice the implementation of first GSF-QC and in 2009 CSQC1.  As a practice inspector he has seen many different implementations of CSQC1 and different issues that can arise. He also a solid knowledge of assurance and accounting frameworks and their application in practice.

Earl MacLeod, CPA, CA is a Partner with MNP LLP in Dartmouth. Doreen Malone, CPA, CA, CFP is a Sr. Private Banker with BMO Private Banking with a background in both the private and not for profit sectors. Craig Maloney, MBA, CPA, CA, CBV is a Partner at MNP LLP. Craig is heavily involved in servicing owner-managed businesses and professionals. He specializes in business valuation and providing strategic business advice and corporate finance advice on M&A transactions, and has developed a particular expertise in private company divestitures. He has industry and functional experience in leveraged buy-outs, capital raising, divestitures and acquisitions. Shari Mann, CPA, CA is a lecturer at the University of Waterloo, president of Strann Consulting Inc. and a member of the Private Enterprise Advisory Committee. Ruth March, C.A., T.E.P. is a Director of Estate Planning with KPMG in Halifax.  She joined KMPG after graduating from Mount Allison University in 1983.  She is responsible for tax planning for a diverse clientele, with a particular understanding of the income tax issues relating to owner-managed businesses, estates and trusts. During 2000-2001 Ruth worked with Maritime Life as an Estate and Tax Planning consultant. She has been a tutorial leader of CICA (now CPA Canada) tax courses and a lecturer for the Canadian Tax Foundation. Ruth is currently the Chair of STEP Canada and a past governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation.  She has served as treasurer of Symphony Nova Scotia and the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Patrick McCrossin, CPA, CA has been with Grant Thornton LLP in Halifax since 2013 when he graduated from St. Francis Xavier University. He focuses primarily on corporate compliance, planning, and personal tax planning. As of August 2018, Patrick has completed the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program. Patrick is treasurer of several organizations and has recently become an online facilitator for the CPA Professional Education Program.

Jennifer Mills, CPA, CA is a Business Advisor and Coach with experience helping entrepreneurs with business strategy development and implementation. Steven Moore, CPA, CA is a Tax Partner with KPMG LLP; he provides a full range of taxation services to a wide variety of Canadian private and public clients in many industries. Justin Melnyk, CPA, CA is a Financial Accountant with the NS Department of Finance and Treasury Board. Kelly Nelson, FCPA, FCA retired in 2014 after 30 years with High Liner Foods, as their CFO. Mr. Nelson was a Member of the Management Committee that set the strategic direction for the company and practiced in the areas of regulatory administration, corporate governance, corporate secretary, risk management, financial reporting, manufacturing accounting, tax, information technology, pension administration, treasury, business development, human resources, and investor relations, as well a leading role in M&A including negotiations, valuations, financings, due diligence, and integration activities. He has a broad range of experience managing Canadian corporate, personal, and trust taxation compliance and planning requirements for both privately held and publicly traded companies as well as tax planning for owner managed businesses.  In addition to presenting various topics at CPA-NS, Kevin has taught the CICA’s In Depth Tax Course, been involved with the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy, and lecturer at the CTF’s Atlantic Tax Conference.
