Leo McKenna, FCPA, FCA


A member of CPA Nova Scotia since 1984, Leo McKenna recently retired as the Chief Financial Officer of the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia. He was responsible for all administration, investments, and financial affairs of the WCB and its 400 employees. 

As Chief Financial Officer, Leo oversaw an annual operating budget of $450 million and an investment portfolio of more than $2 billion. Since Leo was appointed Chief Financial Officer in 1996, the WCB improved its overall funding position from 45 per cent to over 96 per cent.

Previously, Leo served as an auditor and management consultant with a major public accounting firm and also spent part of his management career with a major Canadian restaurant franchisor. 

Leo has volunteered with a number of community groups. He served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Halifax Public Libraries from 2004 to 2010, when multi-level government support for the new Central Library was secured. He has been a member of the Board of the Nova Scotia Public Service Superannuation Plan Trustees Inc. since the new governance framework was established in 2012. Leo also chaired the Investment Committee for the pension plan from 2012 to 2019.
